Labour are wanting to push through their controversial Waste Strategy during a packed agenda at a remote ‘Informal Council Meeting’ on 15th July but 8 Conservative Councillors have called on the Council to hold a Formal Special Council Meeting in person on 29th July, with a single item on the Agenda – the Waste Strategy.
Cllr Simon Eardley who represents Saughall & Mollington ward and is also Conservative Spokesman on Environment matters, said:
“There has been massive public engagement with the proposed new Waste Strategy from the outset with many thousands of residents responding to the public consultation. As soon as the final proposals were aired in public, there has been further mass interest in the controversial plans. This is a major decision for the Council and should be given full and proper scrutiny which is best achieved in-person. The outcome of this will impact every resident in the Borough - we must get it right.”
Cllr Charles Fifield, who represents Weaver & Cuddington ward, added:
“The proposed Waste Strategy and £40 green bin charge has caused huge concerns amongst my residents and as such I feel it deserves to be dealt with at a Special Meeting of the Council to ensure it is properly debated and considered by the Council.”
The Notice has also been signed by fellow Conservative Councillors Chris Basey and Lynn Riley of Frodsham ward, MIke Baynham of Winsford Over & Verdin ward, Keith Board of Great Boughton ward, Jill Houlbrook of Upton ward and Helen Weltman of Davenham, Moulton & Kingsmead ward.
Notice to the Chairman and the Monitoring Officer of Cheshire West and Chester Council
In accordance with 2.4 of Section B4 of Part B of the Council’s Constitution, we the undersigned Members of Cheshire West and Chester Council do hereby request a Special Meeting of the Council to take place in person on Thursday 29th July 2021 in order for the Council’s Waste Strategy to be properly debated.
Under 4.3 of Section B1 of Part B of the Council’s Constitution the Waste Strategy must be approved by Council.
We the undersigned do not consider the proposed remote Informal Meeting on Thursday 15th July will properly allow the Council to consider the Waste Strategy as the Council meeting will not be legally binding and therefore we consider a single item meeting in person on Thursday 29th July 2021 to be the most appropriate way for this matter before.
We the undersigned note that in recent years several single item Special Council meetings have taken place, often at short notice for issues such as the Local Plan and Northgate Development due to their importance and the opportunity a single item Special Council meeting provides for proper discussions and debate.
We therefore feel a legally binding single item Special Council meeting in person for the Waste Strategy on Thursday 29th July 2021 is both entirely appropriate and in the best interests of our residents.
